The mission of Inglewood Elementary School is to build a community of lifelong learners equipped with the skills and experiences to be successful in life. As an Environmental Sciences STEAM Magnet school, they are quickly becoming recognized for high-quality academic instruction and social-emotional education. Their staff stimulates student success through STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) curriculum and project-based learning. They are also deeply dedicated to meeting every child’s social, emotional, academic and enrichment need through academics, arts, enrichment, counseling and community-based support for families and staff.
What does this have to do with TVC, though? Well, as part of our regular missions funding, we sponsor programs at Inglewood Elementary, a local school with high ratio of low-income families. We have provided materials and books for the library, funds for book fair purchases, staff meals and treats as well as school and office supplies. TVC Home Groups have provided classroom celebrations, decorations, gifts, volunteers and supplies — items students and their families aren’t able to fund. In addition to donations, TVC volunteers provide classroom support, library assistance and literacy tutors.
As a Community Achieves school, Inglewood Elementary is dedicated to deep planning around family and community events and programs. Volunteers are needed to help welcome, feed and engage school families and community members at various events. At Family Academic Success Team Nights, volunteers provide childcare and help serve dinner. Upcoming FAST nights are scheduled for October 25 and January 24 from 5-7 pm. Other major school events are the BooHoo/Yahoo Breakfast on August 7 (they need volunteers to provide breakfast for new parents) and the FULL STEAM AHEAD! Family Night on August 30 (volunteers help serve refreshments). There’s also the Book Fair in December where volunteers can shop with students and a variety of other events throughout the school year.
In addition to those special events, they welcome reading tutors, lunch buddies/mentors and classroom helpers. Inglewood Elementary is also currently developing a roster of experts in certain environmental sciences fields to be featured in classroom visits or field trips. If you can help, contact Leigh Patton at 615-519-1836 or [email protected]. Also, we are looking for a TVCer to serve as a liaison with the school. This person would need to have a flexible schedule that allows them to attend weekday meetings and help with events.
